W hat is the Life Goals & Skills Blast??

This is the condensed version of our flagship Life Goals & Skills Program so instead of 4 separate sessions over 4 months, we are now running it over one weekend!

Why should teenagers with a hearing loss attend?

  • You want to meet our legendary Mentors, who have a hearing loss just like you, and more importantly “get it”.
  • Our Mentors have actual life experience of living with hearing aids or Cochlear Implants – they know what it’s like when the battery goes flat!
  • You feel confused or have “lots of questions” about living in a hearing world, or simply have ideas or views you want to share.
  • You are finding being a deaf teenager a little (or very) frustrating, and need a safe place where you can share frustrations, gain ideas, or simply work out plans to improve an area of your life at school, at your hobby, within your family, or just with anyone.
  • You want to hang out with other people who are just like you and just “get it”!
  • A Parent Session on Saturday for parents/teachers of the deaf
  • Phonak Sound Field System and Live Captioning available

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

The Blast is for current deaf or hard of hearing High School students (Year 7 to Year 12). The teenagers will be grouped with peers from the same year group as them.

I live outside of Wollongong NSW but I would really like to attend this Blast. Can I do so?

Yes, of course! Any deaf or hard of hearing teenager is most welcome to enrol in the Blast 🙂

What is the mentor to participant ratio?

Every teenager gets grouped into their year group (7&8, 9&10, 11&12) and each year group will have 2 mentors (1 male and 1 female). The maximum ratio is 1 mentor to 4 participants.

The ticket says it is for ‘One NDIS deaf/hard of hearing teenager’, does this mean I have to purchase a separate tickets for myself (parent) and siblings?

No, if you and your other children wish to accompany your deaf/hard of hearing teenager to the Parent Session, you are welcome to do so at no extra cost.

Interpreters

As of 1st January 2023, we will no longer be covering costs of interpreters. These costs will need to be covered by funds in your NDIS plan.

We are happy to help with the booking but will not be paying for the costs.

Providing accessible programs and workshops for all our participants is incredibly important to us at Hear For You and The Shepherd Centre. It is a key area of advocacy for us with Governments and the NDIS. We know making sure the NDIS understands the need for interpreting services is critical through claiming these services in participant plans. When these funds are covered philanthropically through organizations, there is no awareness of the need or funding requirements., nor is it sustainable for organizations to cover these costs through fundraising.

If you need help with liaising with the NDIA to secure this funding in your NDIS plan, please contact us at [email protected]

Please be advised that by providing us with your child’s details, you agree and give consent to your child to join in Hear For You’s programs/workshops. Hear For You will keep and maintain your details and your child’s details in our database. We, Hear For You, will not share your/your child’s details with other organisations.
