Program Content

Content Level

The topics have been carefully selected to cover critical stages in the teenagers’ formative years at school and beyond. The Hear For You Workshop Manual folders include worksheets and notes which have been expressed in "teenage language".

The level of the content and activities of the program become more advanced for each group at the same time being tailored to the specific needs of the age. This enables students to progress from one group to the next over time.

Topics

Below is a snapshot of the topics which are covered. Each topic is tailored specifically for each age group.

Identity
Who am I? What are my values? What is important to me? What do I stand for? How do I feel about others?

Relationships
My family and their associates. Friends, acquaintances and strangers. Boyfriends / girlfriends. Peer group pressure - where do I fit in?

Communication
Conversation techniques and advice. Negotiation skills. Conflict resolution. Email and SMS etiquette.

Leadership & Teamwork
Understanding the dynamics of leadership and teamwork and how the two work together. Building confidence in speaking in front of a large group. The concept of shared leadership is introduced.

Health & Wellbeing
Developing resilience and self-empowerment skills to cope with hearing loss, stress, anxiety and fear, especially during exams.

Careers
Differences between job and career, career planning, preparing a resume, writing a job application. How to handle job interviews and be upfront about your deafness.

Drama
Drama is an excellent way of acting out responses in certain scenarios to improve confidence and communication.
