WA Mentors

Nicole Marszal

Nicole MarszalNicole Marszal has been profoundly deaf since birth and had her first hearing aids at 14 months. Nicole attended the Speech Hearing Centre in Perth, Western Australia from 1982 - 86. She then went to a mainstream primary school with a teacher of the deaf.

In her high school and university career Nicole was provided with a note taker to help her get through her studies. Nicole graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Science (Cartography). She is employed by LANDGATE (WA Department of Land) as a Cartographer where she applied for the job through their graduate program. This required intensive interviews and research on all participants in which 72 applied for and Nicole was one of the eight selected. She is still with LANDGATE as a senior team member.

During this period Nicole received a scholarship with the Western Australian Institute of Sport for 3 years and was also selected in Softball Australia’s Top 20 Pitchers for their Pitching Program for Sydney 2000 Olympics. Her highest achievement is being selected as the best WA state player at U/19s nationals in 1998.

Nicole also plays soccer and competed in the 2005 Deaflympics in Melbourne. With her sport she has learnt a lot about herself as an individual and dealing with different people in the wider community.

Nicole feels being selected as a mentor for Hear For You is a privilege as it gives her the chance to inspire deaf teenagers, to help them set and achieve goals.

Nicole is a great believer that if you work hard to follow your dreams you will be rewarded and when it gets tough going, persevere and you will prevail.
