Lizzie Eakin

Lizzie EakinLizzie Eakin was diagnosed with profound bilateral hearing loss at 15 months of age. The cause of her hearing loss is unknown.

Lizzie went to the Catholic Centre for Hearing Impaired Children at Strathfield where she participated in an Auditory-Oral Program. Her parents decided to send her to mainstream preschool, primary school and high school. She never learnt how to sign because her parents were determined to teach her to speak.

Lizzie’s challenges growing up with a hearing loss were mainly communication issues and missing out on music, radio, and conversations around the dinner table. Despite this, she went to university when she finished her Higher School Certificate completing two bachelor degrees and a post graduate certificate.

Lizzie has backpacked overseas a number of times on her own and this was always a very empowering experience for her. This allowed her to become independent and confident.

Lizzie has spent the past nine years working as an early childhood special educator with families of children with a wide range of disabilities. She now works as a Director of a pre-school in Sydney. She wants to help other young people with hearing loss to aspire to do the very best they can.

Her motto in life is that if you strive to achieve happiness in yourself, it helps everything to fall into place.
